At the Organization for Human Brain Mapping annual meeting of 2025 in Australia, Linda presented the multicenter study on structure-function multilayer network integration in multiple sclerosis (MS) led by Lucas. Using multimodal MRI data from 780 people with MS across 13 European centers, we explored how the brain’s frontoparietal network integrates structure and function and how this relates to cognitive performance. We found that multilayer network metrics relate to cognition in MS, but the associations are weak and vary by brain atlas, highlighting both promise and pitfalls of current multilayer models. This work points to the need for more nuanced approaches to capture the complex neurobiological underpinnings of cognitive impairment, particularly in MS.
