My background is in (neuro)psychology and quantitative research, with a particular interest in understanding how symptoms interact and how people differ in their response to interventions. During my Research Master’s in Clinical and Developmental Psychopathology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I became increasingly interested in studying psychological and physiological processes as dynamic, interconnected systems rather than in isolation. Throughout my studies, I worked on research projects involving mental health, psychophysiology, intensive longitudinal data, and intervention research. In particular, working with ecological momentary assessment introduced me to network approaches and sparked my interest in using quantitative methods to understand the complex interactions between symptoms. This also led to a broader interest in how these methods can help us understand how and why interventions work for some people but not for others, and ultimately how they might inform more individualized approaches to care.
My PhD is a part of the FAIR-CARE project, where I will focus on cancer-related fatigue, one of the most common and burdensome symptoms experienced by people with cancer. Despite its substantial impact on daily functioning and quality of life, there is considerable variation in who develops severe and persistent fatigue and who benefits from available interventions. Using Bayesian network models, I will investigate how symptom networks differ between people with and without cancer-related fatigue, as well as how symptom networks relate to intervention response. Ultimately, we hope this work can contribute to a more individualized understanding of cancer-related fatigue and provide insight into why the same treatment may work well for one person but not for another.
